Competitive Rig worker Salaries

Let us not deny the fact that we were also affected by the impact of the recent economic recession, and therefore are looking for higher paying jobs to make sure that our family is not made to suffer changes from the lifestyle they have been used to. Although there are a lot of jobs out there, only a few can give you the compensation that you want, and one of those jobs is to be an oil rig worker.

We all know that the oil industry can greatly impact a country’s economy on a national scale, and can help in the maintenance of the industrial civilization on a global scale. This assures you that the oil industry will never run out of the picture, and this is why it is both practical and ideal to be a rig worker.

And if you think only engineers are entitled to work for oil rigs, you better think again. In fact, there are different types of jobs and positions available in this industry. But even if you start at the bottom of the ladder, the salary for a basic rig worker is already around $35, 000 a month. However, when you have the degree, experience and trainings, you can earn up to $70,000 a month. That sounds like a good deal, right?

There are two major group types in the oil industry: the deck crew and the drill crew.

Deck crew workers are the ones who work in order to make sure that the rig is in top shape and can therefore perform its functions properly. Due to this nature of work, a rig worker under the deck crew should expect to have physically demanding tasks. Positions under this set of workers include crane operators, barge engineers, painters, welders and roustabouts.

Crane operators, as stated, are in charge of managing the oil rig’s cranes. These cranes bring the equipment from supply boats and into the rig itself. Crane operators, along with heir assistants, are in charge of performing the general maintenance required in order for the oil rig to perform its functions effectively, and to maximize its other uses.

So if the crane operators are in charge of the general functions, a rig worker listed as a barge engineer is in charge of managing the basic functions on the rig. Their duties include anchoring and stability of the rig, dealing with coast guards in case of issues, and fire and safety procedures.

Welders and painters make sure that the rig is in shape, and is free from elements which may hinder in its proper functions, like rust; while those described as roustabouts are in charge of, or assists in, loading and unloading of equipment, drilling and other forms of general rig maintenance.

If you think that work under the deck crew is not for you, you may opt to be a rig worker under the drill crew instead. However, workers under the drill crew must have years of experience since most of the important responsibilities fall under their care, especially the drillers. Since they are about to drill fluids, he must apply certain techniques and knowledge about well-pressure systems, and therefore must have the skill and experience it takes.

Another type of rig worker under the drill crew is the roughnecks. Roughnecks are usually grouped into three, and are tasked to help each other in operating the heavy drilling equipment. However, with this nature, expect the job to be physically demanding.

And when you’ve gathered enough experience and knowledge of how the industry works, you might get promoted into the management. But if you think it will be less strenuous from there, you’re wrong. In fact, a rig worker in high positions spends longer days at the rig since they are in charge of directing and handling their workers.

The people working in the managerial positions include engineers, drilling managers and toolpushers. These people make sure that they share their extensive knowledge in the proper drilling application of fluids and other procedures in guiding those under the deck and drill crews.

But remember, in looking for a job, don’t be too demanding. You may always have to start at the bottom before you climb your way to the top. After all, there are a lot of high paying jobs even when your functions are basic, just like a rig worker.
